Ryan Egger resigned the Secretary post due to his move to Houston. The CCGS Board voted to replace Ryan with Allison Corcoran, who volunteered to accept the Secretary position and to continue on as the Arrangements Chairman. Thanks to energetic young volunteers like Allison, the CCGS will continue to prosper.
October is a busy month for the geological community. The GCAGS Annual Meeting will be held October 6-8 in New Orleans. The CCGS still needs a chairman for the 2016 convention. If we cannot find a chairman soon the society will have to pass on the convention. The CCGS has hosted the GCAGS convention eight times (1952, 1958, 1964, 1972, 1981, 1989, 1998, and 2007). Please give me a call if you are interested.
The Corpus Christi Oilman’s Tennis Tournament will be held October 11-12 at the HEB Tennis Center. This event is a big scholarship fundraiser for the CCGS, API and SPE.
The monthly luncheon speaker on Oct. 16 will be Jamie Rich. The topic will be “Unconventional Geophysics for Unconventional Plays.” Due to a scheduling conflict, the October meeting will be held at the Water Street Seafood Company upstairs banquet room. This is the restaurant behind the one on Water Street.
An honorary membership award will be presented at the October 16 luncheon to Dan Pedrotti. Dan has been a very successful geologist who served his country as a fighter pilot in the Air Force. He is a very active member of the CCGS serving as President, Vice President, Treasurer, Secretary, AAPG Delegate, and as 2007 GCAGS Convention Co-Chairman. Dan is also active with many local charitable organizations.
Also, Joe O’Brien will be honored posthumously with the Distinguished Geologist award. Joe O’Brien was also a very successful geologist who served his country during World War II and the Corpus Christi Geological Society for many years. He was president in 1956-1957 and regularly attended meetings as long as he was able. He was instrumental in beginning the geology department at Texas A&M University Corpus Christi and in starting the current Corpus Christi Geological Society Scholarship Fund.
In conjunction with the Jackson School of Geosciences, we will be co-hosting the premier showing of the documentary “Switch” on October 22 at the Lexington. Drinks and hors d’oeuvres will be provided. The BEG describes the movie as, “…a realistic, engaging and thorough examination of global energy supply, demand, infrastructure, and scale.” The producers of the film are Scott Tinker, Director of the BEG, and Harry Lynch, an award-winning documentary director. Please mark that date on your calendar.
